LANL Foundation Awards 41 Students with Career Pathways Scholarships
Española, NM – Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Foundation is awarding 41 Northern New Mexico students Career Pathways Scholarships. These awards are for individuals who have a specific career in mind and are committed to earning an associate’s degree or certification in any field or trade. They are available to high school students and adult learners with a high school diploma or GED/High School Equivalency (HSE).
“Our Career Pathways Scholarship recipients represent a wide array of disciplines,” said Mike Ammerman, Scholarship Program Director at LANL Foundation. “From healthcare to business administration to welding and other trades, these students are all furthering their career goals with these scholarships. Some of these students are just graduating high school while others have had entire careers and have decided to switch gears.”
James Coriz, a senior at Santa Fe Indian School, has a clear vision for his future career as an electrician. “My Native American community of Kewa is low on electricians. We don’t have any local electricians and the certified ones are all outside of the Pueblo. This makes it harder for Kewa residents to find reliable electricians. The Kewa Pueblo is very community oriented, almost everyone knows each other either through a friend of a friend or a distant family member. Even if the ‘best electrician’ was an hour away, most of Kewa would use a local service since they would know how life goes in the Pueblo. I hope to be that local service that people can trust.”
Four students received the Anchorum St. Vincent/ Christus St. Vincent Medical Pathways Scholarship.

- Letizia Velazquez Maldonado, Central New Mexico Community College, Emergency Medical Services
- Camila Vila, Central New Mexico Community College, Electrical Trades
Three students were awarded the Communities in Schools’ Future Forward Scholarship, which is designated for students from Capital High School in Santa Fe, who participated in the Communities in Schools program.

- Leslie Garcia, Santa Fe Community College, Business Administration
- Emanuel Martinez Perez, University of New Mexico, Education

Awards are $750 per semester, up to $3,000. Applications are evaluated by the Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund (LAESF) Advisory Committee. Applicants must be residents of Los Alamos, Mora, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, Sandoval, Santa Fe, or Taos counties. Scholarships are made possible by donations from LANL employees, retirees, and community members across Northern New Mexico.
