Hundreds of students flocked to the Roundhouse on Thursday to advocate for STEAM education across New Mexico at this year’s STEAM Day at the Legislature, hosted by LANL Foundation. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education is a vital part of getting our state ready for the future. Every student in New Mexico should have access to STEAM education so they can develop the knowledge, skills, and practices demanded by the 21st Century.
In an exciting culmination of innovation and creativity, the New Mexico Governor's STEM Challenge took place at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque this weekend. The event, held Saturday, showcased bright young minds in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) with over 40 high school teams participating from across the state.
LANL Foundation is now accepting applications for their Community Outreach Grants. These grants support schools, school districts, non-profits, Pueblos, Nations, and Tribal communities in the seven-county area of Los Alamos, Mora, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, San Miguel, Santa Fe, and Taos counties. Interested applicants should apply for the $5,000 grant before the deadline of February 15th. The Foundation will be awarding 16 Community Outreach Grants for a total of $80,000.
LANL Foundation has released a new report, “Resilient Families: Helping Grandparents and Kin Raise Children in New Mexico,” detailing the growth and specific needs of kinship families in the state and making recommendations for how these families can be better supported.
Nine teachers from Northern New Mexico have been recognized by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) as National Board Certified Teachers. The teachers were part of the LANL Foundation’s National Board Certification for Local Teachers Program. National Board Certification is one of the highest forms of certification for educators and a recognition of accomplished teaching. Statewide, 70 teachers and counselors were named as achieving their National Board Certification.
LANL Foundation is now accepting applications for Career Pathways Scholarships. These awards are for individuals who have a specific career in mind and are committed to earning an associate’s degree or certification in any field or trade. They are available to high school students and adult learners with a high school diploma or GED/High School Equivalency (HSE).
The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Foundation has earned the Platinum distinction by Family Friendly New Mexico (FFNM) for its workplace policies. FFNM is a statewide initiative developed to recognize employers that have adopted policies that give New Mexico businesses an advantage in recruiting and retaining the best employees.
Longtime LANL Foundation colleague Tony Fox has been named the Interim CEO of the Foundation while the Board of Directors seeks a permanent replacement for Jenny Parks, who is stepping down at the end of the year.
Jenny Parks, President and CEO of the LANL Foundation, announced that she is stepping down from her role at the end of this year to pursue a new position as Senior Vice President of Strategic Philanthropy at Anchorum. Parks has led the LANL Foundation, the largest non-profit organization in the state dedicated solely to education, since 2015.
