As New Mexico’s largest foundation dedicated exclusively to education, the LANL Foundation joins many of our fellow nonprofits, educators, students, and families in expressing deep concern over the recent executive order to effectively close the U.S. Department of Education. In this moment of uncertainty, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to New Mexico’s students, educators, and communities, recognizing the strengths and resources that will sustain us in the years ahead.

Since our founding in 1997, the LANL Foundation has been guided by the belief that children in Northern New Mexico deserve access to meaningful, public educational opportunities in their home communities. Our mission is rooted in the conviction that education is not only a public good but a necessity and a fundamental right. Every student should have the opportunity to learn, thrive, and contribute to society in ways that reflect their unique talents and perspectives.

While education is largely shaped at the local and state levels, the U.S. Department of Education has played a vital role in advancing student achievement nationwide. From ensuring civil rights protections, to providing long-term data on educational progress and investments in research, to providing essential funding for students with disabilities through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and expanding access to higher education via financial aid programs, the Department of Education has played an instrumental role in setting forth a vision of equitable access to excellence in education for all children across the nation. The potential loss of these, and other, critical supports raises serious concerns about fairness, access, and the well-being of our students. Most significantly, it is a national imperative to lift up public education as a fundamental lever for economic development and competitiveness, a broad foundation for civic participation and democracy, and a critical component of ensuring our national security.

New Mexico has demonstrated a strong commitment to public education, with significant investments and policies aimed at improving student outcomes. Notably, we have done so while honoring the diverse communities we serve. In addition to state government support, our robust nonprofit and philanthropic sectors play a crucial role in advancing educational opportunities. However, we must acknowledge that many of our students—particularly Native American, English language learners, students with disabilities, and those from low-income and rural communities—remain among the most historically underserved. Addressing these challenges, especially in light of the Martinez/Yazzie Consolidated Lawsuit, requires coordinated efforts at every level of government and society.

As we navigate this changing landscape, the LANL Foundation remains steadfast in our mission. We are working closely with our partners in philanthropy, education, and government to monitor developments, advocate for students, and ensure that essential services continue. Our commitment to fairness, excellence, and opportunity for all students will not waver.

Though the road ahead may be uncertain, we find assurance in the collective strength of our community. Together, we will continue striving for the best for New Mexico’s students, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Our partnerships, our work, and our shared dedication to education will guide us forward.
