The Mission Continues: Honoring Veterans Through Education

In 2024, a vision became reality. Thanks to the dedication of the LANL Veterans community, the Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund Advisory Committee, and the LANL Foundation, the Veterans Scholarship Fund was created to honor military service by opening doors to education for veterans and their families across Northern New Mexico.

What began with a $10,000 seed fund has already grown into a thriving resource. In 2025, the first five scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded—supporting students whose stories reflect resilience, leadership, and the values of service that define our veteran community.

Meet this year’s remarkable recipients:

Kevin Griego, a U.S. Army veteran and Bronze Star recipient, will complete his bachelor’s degree in business this fall and plans to pursue an MBA while working full-time and raising a family.

Leenah Romero, a 2025 Santa Fe Indian School graduate, is the daughter of a Marine Corps veteran. She will attend CNM to earn an associate degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Leenah is committed to inspiring her Native American community and making a meaningful impact.

Celestino Salazar-Archuleta, a 2025 McCurdy Charter High School graduate and son of a Marine Corps sergeant, will attend Northern New Mexico College to earn his Electrician license. He plans to complete the program and pursue an apprenticeship in his trade.

Gloria Maria Serrano, a top UNM student inspired by her stepfather and grandfather’s military service, dedicates her talents in biochemistry and volunteer work at the VA to honoring veterans’ stories and improving lives through science.

Kaitlynn Russell, the daughter of dual-service parents, a JROTC leader, Civil Air Patrol Squadron Commander, and inaugural Female Eagle Scout, plans to study computer engineering to build solutions in robotics and cybersecurity.

Why Your Support Matters

Since its launch, the Veterans Scholarship Fund has raised over $22,000. After awarding $5,000 in scholarships this year, $17,000 remains available for future students. But we want to do more. With continued support from LANL employees, local veterans’ organizations, and community donors, we can grow the fund to increase both the number and size of awards each year.

Together, we can ensure that Northern New Mexico veterans and their families have the support they deserve to build brighter futures.
