Dear Community Members,
In times of change and uncertainty, we want to take a moment to reaffirm our steadfast commitment to the students, families, educators, and communities of Northern New Mexico. As the largest foundation in the state exclusively dedicated to education, we recognize the challenges posed by recent policy and funding shifts at the federal level. At the same time, we recognize the strength and resilience that define our communities.
As a nation, we are navigating profound questions about our identity, values, and shared vision for the future. These discussions impact us all, particularly those dedicated to ensuring that every child has access to the highest quality education. We acknowledge that many in our communities are facing uncertainty, and we want you to know that the LANL Foundation remains unwavering in our mission to support you.
In the spirit of unity, we reaffirm our commitment to uplifting public education, supporting students, young people and families, and working hand-in-hand with educators and advocates across the region. We believe that New Mexicans are strongest when we come together. The rich cultural heritage of our state, the perseverance of Tribal nations, the generations of hardworking families who have shaped our communities, and the people who have more recently become part of our story all contribute to a shared vision of progress and opportunity.
Since our founding in 1997, the LANL Foundation has been rooted in the belief that every student deserves excellent educational experiences, pathways to meaningful careers, and the ability to contribute their unique brilliance to the strength of our communities, state, and nation. We fundamentally believe in the potential of each child. We are honored to serve the seven counties of North Central New Mexico, its 18 sovereign Pueblos, Tribes, and Nations, and every individual committed to the success of children, students, and youth.
We recognize and celebrate the diverse identities of those we serve, understanding that culture, language and identity are essential elements of educational success. We are committed to amplifying the voices of our community members and partners, ensuring that their perspectives inform and guide our work. Above all, we remain firm in our belief that high-quality, accessible, public education is essential for the well-being of individuals, families, and ultimately, communities.
So, what are we doing in this moment?
We are lifting up Northern New Mexico. By focusing on the strengths of our communities and partners, we continue to act locally to realize our shared vision for education in New Mexico.
We are providing direct support. Through our programs for students, educators, and families, we are working closely with school districts, tribal leaders, and community members to shape a new strategic plan that meets the needs of those we serve.
We are creating spaces for dialogue. Through coordinating several collaborative groups, we foster important conversations to address the complex challenges and opportunities in education and move towards collective action and shared solutions.
We are advocating for lasting change. We work closely with allies to improve state policy and funding and strengthen partnerships with tribal and state governments to ensure that New Mexico’s students, educators, and communities receive the resources and support they need to thrive.
We are providing direct funding. By supporting partners and initiatives that further public education in New Mexico, we are creating even more ambitious and robust opportunities on the horizon.
We are offering scholarships. Our direct financial assistance helps Northern New Mexico students access higher education and career pathways immediately.
We are investing in sustainability. By partnering with donors, we are building long-term, self-sustaining investments to support stable funding for continued work in our community that uplifts education from early childhood to young adulthood.
No matter what lies ahead, our commitment remains unwavering – we are more determined than ever to support our students, families, and educators. Our children deserve nothing less.
Together, we will continue to build a brighter future for Northern New Mexico.
With gratitude and dedication,
Gwen Perea Warniment, Ph.D.
