Applying for the LANL Summer Internship Program

Application Guide

Expectations

  • Interns are expected to be available to work full-time hours or near full-time hours.
  • Interns are expected to participate in professional development opportunities and showcase their internship project at an end-of-summer symposium.

Students who wish to participate in this internship program at LANL must:

  • Be a recent recipient of a LAESF scholarship.
  • Be at least 16 years of age at time of internship.
  • Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Provide documentation of acceptance into an undergraduate program (if the student has not yet started an undergraduate program and/or enrolled in courses). This will be required later at the time hiring paperwork is completed.

How to Apply

Scholarship applicants interested in LANL summer internship opportunities should answer all required questions under the LANL Internships section of the scholarship application. All scholarship recipients who answered yes to the required questions will automatically be considered for internship opportunities if they meet all eligibility requirements and are not currently employed as LANL interns.

Relevant sections of the scholarship application (e.g., Education Information, Employment Information, Academic Awards/Honors, Extracurricular Activities, Career Goals, etc.) will be provided to LANL hiring officials by the LANL Foundation Scholarship Administration Team.

Scholarship applicants are STRONGLY encouraged to also apply separately for a LANL internship through the LANL online application system. Please refer the LANL Undergraduate Internship Program Guide and follow the directions explicitly.

Required Documents

To be considered for the internship program, students must:

  • Submit a complete scholarship application by the application deadline.
  • Indicate their interest in internship opportunities by answering all questions under the LANL Internships section of the scholarship application.

The LANL Student Programs Office may require additional documentation, like an updated resume, at time of internship placement.

The Selection Process

Mentors will contact prospective interns directly. Interviews may be informal phone conversations or formal in-person interviews, so it is recommended you prepare for both situations. Mentors may begin contacting students in mid-March at the earliest.

The Student Programs Office recommends preparing a list of questions in advance to ask about the internship, such as:

  • Can you tell me more about the work done in your organization?
  • What kinds of projects will I work on as an intern?
  • What will a typical workday be like?
  • Who will I be working with and how much interaction will I have with other employees?
  • What days and hours will I be working? If you have a vacation planned during the summer, you need to let the prospective mentor know.

The Hiring Process

Students who are selected for an internship will be contacted by Angelica Lopez, LANL Student Programs Office, regarding required paperwork. Selected students should be prepared to complete new hire paperwork in one week or less, due to the short time-frame.
