Sylvan Argo, New Grants Manager

Aligning Head, Heart and Hand in Service to the Community

LANL Foundation is pleased to welcome Sylvan Argo as Grants Manager. This new position was created to broaden the foundation’s grantmaking impact, build community connection and accommodate program growth.

Ms. Argo is a dedicated advocate for social equity, youth voice and redefining success and achievement. She has a diverse background working with schools, governments and nonprofits in Northern New Mexico, as well as with government and nonprofit sectors nationally and internationally. She has facilitated and managed cross-cultural programs, community-based ecological projects, social-emotional support programs, and environmental school-year and summer programs and camps for youth in the Los Alamos, Española and Pojoaque area. Most recently, she worked for 10 years with The Family YMCA in Los Alamos, the last five of which were spent serving as Director of the Los Alamos Teen Center.

“I am honored to join the LANL Foundation’s dedicated team of staff, volunteers and project partners. Work with the Foundation is particularly meaningful to me, as it offers the opportunity to align my head, heart and hand in service to community. I look forward to working with our regional partners to explore innovative ways to cultivate a culture of lifelong learning, collaboration and community engagement,” said Argo.

Ms. Argo strives to cultivate and affirm connections between people, place and community. Born in Botswana, Africa, and raised primarily overseas in various countries spanning Africa and the Middle East, she has strong family roots in Northern New Mexico that have brought her here throughout her lifetime. As a Third Culture Kid, she appreciates and celebrates New Mexico’s richly diverse, multicultural environment.

“With her compassion, experience and deep connection to the greater Northern New Mexico community, Sylvan can further bridge the needs and opportunities in education through the LANL Foundation’s grantmaking process,” said LANL Foundation CEO Jenny Parks. “We are excited to have her join us.”

LANL Foundation awards small grants of up to $2500 for education and community programs during two yearly funding cycles. Grants are designated for K–12 public education as well as community needs and some events in the seven-county service area.

Additionally, as part of the K–12 Program Office, larger grants are available by invitation to support promising programs that affect positive change in the region, aligned with four funding priorities:

Growth of teachers and leadership development in the education profession,
Support for the social and emotional wellbeing of educators and students,
Fortification of STEAM learning opportunities to answer the call for workforce needs, and
Advocacy for children and learners of all ages to reach their full potential in life
