$15,000 in Scholarships Awarded to 15 Nontraditional Students

July 22, 2015 - LANL Foundation announces 15 Northern New Mexicans each received $1000 Regional College/Returning Student scholarships from the Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund.

These awards help nontraditional students return to formal education to expand their opportunities or pursue new careers with a certification or two-year degree from an accredited college in Northern New Mexico.

Funding comes from donations made by Los Alamos National Laboratory employees and Los Alamos National Security, LLC. Scholarships are administered by the LANL Foundation with student selection and program oversight provided by an advisory committee of volunteer donors.

Awards go to:

  • Aldo Arevalo, Rio Arriba, studying information technology engineering at Northern New Mexico College
  • Tiffany Berger, Taos, studying pre-science/nursing at the University of New Mexico - Taos
  • Carlos Carreon, Santa Fe, studying film at Santa Fe Community College
  • Ashley Daniels, Santa Fe, studying nursing at Santa Fe Community College
  • Helen Milenski, Los Alamos, studying pre-engineering at the University of New Mexico - Los Alamos
  • Greg Miller, Santa Fe, studying human services at Santa Fe Community College
  • Santiago Montano, Rio Arriba, studying nursing at Northern New Mexico College
  • Stephen Montoya, Santa Fe, studying business and psychology at Santa Fe Community College
  • Kristie Neslen, Santa Fe, studying accounting/business administration at Santa Fe Community College
  • Melanie Salazar, San Miguel, studying human services at Santa Fe Community College
  • Nathan Sedillo, Santa Fe, studying business administration at Santa Fe Community College
  • Jennifer Tarantello, Los Alamos, studying science (physicians assistant program) at the University of New Mexico - Los Alamos
  • Angela Udemezue, Santa Fe (originally from Nigeria), studying nursing at Santa Fe Community College
  • Ashley Urban, Santa Fe, studying accounting and business administration at Santa Fe Community College
  • Kelly Whitchurch, Santa Fe, studying business administration at Santa Fe Community College

Since 2011, 111 of these scholarships have supported Northern New Mexicans from Los Alamos, Mora, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, Sandoval, Santa Fe and Taos counties. Scholarships are awarded twice each year. The next application process will begin in October with a deadline of December 1, 2015.
